“She’s a ball buster,” Trevor said, grinning.

“I’m serious. No matter what you think or how brave you pretend to be, the fact is the law in this town runs things a bit differently. Sheriff Jefferson has a huge group by his side, hunters that are well trained in gun use. This is the Bayou and those boys don’t follow any rules. Do you understand what I’m saying to you?”

“I get it, Larken. I do, but I refuse to allow any man to run me off. I’m not a woman who believes in superstition so why would you think I’d accept his bullshit?”

Larken squeezed her shoulder. “You are coming with us. Period. Now, either you can grab some things, or I’ll send someone back for them. This isn’t something we are going to debate.”

“We should make it look like she’s still here, maybe come back later, catch a few in the act,” Bristol suggested.

“Good idea,” Trevor said as he took another look at the deer. “They’ll return, the fuckers.”

“Yeah, but we’re not going to confront them, not with everything on the line. Period.” Larken looked from one to the other.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she stated and backed away. As Larken grabbed her hand, tossing her over his shoulder, she squealed, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Keeping you safe.” Larken trudged to the passenger side of the truck. “My patience is wearing thin.”

“I think she needs a hard lesson in who’s in control,” Bristol suggested. “I’ll take a look at the breaker box. See what I can do. If it can be fixed, I’ll turn on some lights.”

“We’ll grab some of her things.” Trevor had a lilt in his voice.

Scarlet groaned, struggling to get out of his arms.

“Trust me, that is going to happen.” Larken dumped her onto the seat, lowering his head. “You belong to us. The time has come. We can do this the easy way, or I’ll tie you in and I’ll continue to keep you chained in my cabin for your own safety. Your choice.”

As he breathed across her skin, she shuddered. And her reaction had nothing to do with fear.
